Giovanna Calvenzi was a picture editor for a number of Italian periodicals from 1985 to 2019. She was artistic director of the Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie di Arles in 1998, guest curator of Photo España in Madrid in 2002, and artistic delegate, with Laura Serani, to Paris Photo Month in 2014. She has taught history of photography and photo editing in Milan and Bologna and is heavily involved in research into contemporary photography. She has looked after the Gabriele Basilico Archive since 2013. Her publications include Italia. Ritratto di un Paese in Sessant’anni di Fotografia (2003), Letizia Battaglia.
