Tako Armchair (Cushioned)

Tako Armchair (Cushioned), Tako Dining Table

Thanks to the sinuosity of its lines the armchair seems to be carved in wood just like a sculpture. The cushion adds comfort and completes the seating.

The collection of solid wood chairs and tables designed by Naoto Fukasawa, whose name is a Japanese word meaning octopus, is characterized by a particular curvature of the backrest and armrests of the chair, as well as of the legs of the table, reminiscent of the profile of an octopus. The collection perfectly represents Maruni “Industrialized Craftsmanship” motto as it was realized through cutting techniques using CNC machines, originally possible only by hand, but, the technological application studied by Maruni, allows the complex shape mass producible.

With MARUNI COLLECTION 2021, the upholstered version of the Tako armchair is added to the lineup: thanks to the sinuosity of its lines, obtained through Maruni cutting-edge woodworking techniques and know-how in the handcrafting processes, the armchair seems to be carved in wood just like a sculpture. A unique flow links the backrest to the legs while the round shape of the seat gently wraps around the body. Plus, in this new model the cushion adds comfort and completes the seating: “like a macaron, the cushioned seat is thin yet soft and comfortable.” (Naoto Fukasawa)

In order to meet any taste and fit in with any furniture and style, the cushion is available in both leather and fabric and in several colours and nuances.

Product description
Naoto Fukasawa comments:
“Now, there are certain shapes that have become feasible to be created, because of application of highly developed processing techniques of cutting out solid wood, by using a CNC machine. It was difficult to manufacture a wooden chair by working in all the three dimensions together, for a long time. I wanted to implement a three-dimensional free- form curve into a mass producible wooden chair, but not by using the traditional wood bending techniques. This chair can showcase the shape, which was earlier only possible by handcrafting it piece by piece, in solid wood. A chair that goes well with a glass of wine or a white tablecloth, is something that first came to my mind! The chair has turned out into a form like that of an octopus, so I named it “Tako”. In addition to the wooden seats introduced last year, upholstered seats have been added to our lineup. Like a macaron, the cushioned seat is thin yet soft and comfortable.“
