A contemporary handcrafted design for the outdoors by Kengo Kuma for GANDIABLASCO
The rug as an enveloping piece of furniture
With the Hos collection, the Japanese architect Kengo Kuma has explored the possibilities of fabrics made with recycled PET fibers, creating a series of textiles with the consistency of a rug, inspired by natural phenomena and elements, which he has used as a membrane in combination with different wooden frames to design furniture with a very architectural structure. Pieces that seek to provide warmth and softness, enveloping the human body and, in some way, also protecting it.
“The texture of recycled PET seemed very interesting to me, so I decided to experiment by combining it with wood. Recycled PET has a rich texture, similar to natural materials, and a certain roughness that I find very attractive. By using the rugs as a membrane on the wooden frames, I have been able to work with more freedom in the design of the rug. In Hos, I believe that the contrast between the rigidity of its wooden frames and the malleability of the rugs has been successfully expressed in its different elements ,” says Kengo Kuma.
The Japanese architect has worked with GAN on the development of the rug fabrics, while the concept of Hos was rather conceived as a collection for GANDIABLASCO, thus creating a bridge between both brands of Gandia Blasco Group.
